a tale of romance and fate…

German-born Simon Obholzer visited Cape Town, South Africa in 2003 and fell in love with the country’s landscape, people and diverse cultures. By chance, Simon met Celia in the Spring of 2008 and fell in love – at first sight!

In 2012 they got married in the winelands of Celia’s hometown Wellington and that very same year they decided to manage the vineyards on the family farm, Woestkloof, with the intention of producing their own wine by the summer of 2013.

It was their shared love for wine that ignited the passion and drive to start this project. Simon’s enthusiasm and dedication to learn as much as possible about wine farming with the guidance of Celia’s father, Ben, has seen the well-established vineyards grow from strength to strength.

On their safari honeymoon they met Johann Innerhofer, a wine connoiseur from South Tyrol, who resides in Somerset West and worked for Sassicaia in Toscana. A conversation about wines and vineyards led to a friendship and mentorship.

With a strong and experienced wine farming team and a priceless wine production team, the first vintage from the old vines was harvested and pressed into an exquisite result. The quality and beauty of the wine, surpassed all expectations.

The name SIMELIA, originates from the combination of Simon and Celia, and therefore celebrates the romantic story of two persons coming together in the Cape Winelands to produce world class wines.
