Growing Season
The summer of 2019 was an unusual one to say the least. The Western Cape was still experiencing its three year drought and the expectation was that the summer season would be exceptionally hot and dry. In October 2018, a very unexpected heat wave hit the Cape Winelands area, which caught most wine-farmers off guard during the blossoming period.

At Woestkloof we had to irrigate to ensure minimal loss in our vineyards. The ripening period in January and February was then unusually cooler than expected, which in effect was very positive for the over all grape analysis and the quality of the wine. Then in March, came an unbelievable and very unseasonable amount of rain, which was very concerning to many wine farmers with later varietals. We had fortunately harvested our Cabernet Sauvignon just prior to these rains. The quality of our grapes from all our varietals were really exceptional.

SOIL Decomposed Granite with traces of Table Mountain Sandstone

Vinification and Ageing
ANALYSIS: Alcohol 14 % vol, Residual Sugar 2.5 gm/l, Total Acidity 6.0 gm/l, pH 3.46

The clusters were hand-picked into 18-kg crates and then selected and sorted by hand before destem, and finally softly crushed. All grapes come exclusively from our own single vineyard block situated on our farm at 200m altitude above sea level.

Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at temperatures between 26-30°C for 10 days, followed by 10-15 days of maceration on the skins. The malolactic fermentation took place mainly in French oak barrels, 45% new french oak and 55% second, third and fourth filled barrels. The wine then remained in barrels, in temperature-controlled cellars for 24 months. After bottling, the wine aged a further 3 months prior to release.

Tasting Notes
Complex, profound nose with a peppery-berry spice, elegant approach on the palate expansive, intense fruit
with a velvety finish. A beautiful wine to be enjoyed with family and friends.

Growing Season
The Cape Winelands was finally relieved from the years of drought due to the decent rains brought on by the winter of 2020. The entire summer season was very much considered to be moderate compared to other summer seasons. The milder summer resulted in the grapes ripening slower and on average the varietals were harvested about 2 weeks later than normal.

It was challenging to wait for the grapes to ripen, but on a positive note, we were able to judge exactly on which day to harvest to achieve perfect ripeness. The harvest of 2021 will definitely be remembered for challenging our patience, but most of all for producing wines of exceptional colour, flavour and above all, great quality.

2017 Growing Season
Following a very dry season during 2016, the grape harvest in general was higher in the Cape Winelands. Interestingly the summer was hot, but since we experienced cooler nights throughout the growing season, it greatly assisted the grapes during the ingoing drought. Even though our water supply was adequate, we managed the water usage very carefully to assist the ripening process of the grapes. The dry conditions were favourable in the sense that there were no diseases present in the vineyards. The grape berries were also a bit smaller than usual which also provided amazing flavour concentration and a beautiful colour to our wines. Harvest time was a bit cooler than previous years, which then created the ideal conditions for a truly exceptional vintage.

2016 Growing Season
The ongoing drought in the Western Cape was evident with the very low rainfall we experienced in the winter of 2015. The summer started to pick up the pace in November, which then saw the temperatures sore into the 40’s during December and January. This incredibly hot and dry summer season was challenging for many grape farmers. We have the good fortune that our water supply was very adequate and with excellent vineyard management our vineyards performed very well. The harvest was earlier than usual, yet yielded higher than 2015. The quality of the grapes was very good. Interestingly the 2016 vintage is remembered for its delicate and elegant flavours compared to the bolder flavours from 2015. Both our single vineyard Syrah block, as well as the Merlot block was harvested by hand. The grapes were then sorted by hand on the sorting table, ensuring only the best grapes are used for our wines. 2016 was also the year we harvested for our reserve range, which would mature for 3 years in the best quality barrels.
