2015 Growing Season
The winter of 2014 will be remembered for the start of a drought that would last for some years. Even though the rainfall in the Western Cape was significantly lower than previous years it was still perfectly adequate for our vineyards. The vineyards rested well during the colder months and interestingly started budding a bit sooner than previous seasons. Our teams suckered the vineyards to ensure all energy would go into grape formation and ripening. The meticulous vineyard management during the growing season enabled excellent health of our vines. Harvest 2015 will be remembered for the marked increase in crop yields and due to the warm summer an earlier than usual harvest at the end of January and beginning February. Our teams worked harder than ever before to harvest the high yield and to select only the best bunches. A beautiful wine was produced marked by freshness and elegance.

The malolactic fermentation took place mainly in French oak barrels, 30% new and 70% second, third and fourth filled barrels. Tasting Notes

A refreshing and fruit-driven spicy Syrah from the beautiful mountain slopes of Wellington, historically known for its special terroir for Syrah, where cool nights and warm days prevail.

A vibrant yet typical, light peppery wine with hints of eucalyptus with traces of earthy minerality unique to the granite and sandstone region. A delightful wine to be enjoyed for any occasion from our single vineyard.

2016 Growing Season
The ongoing drought in the Western Cape was evident with the very low rainfall we experienced in the winter of 2015. The summer started to pick up the pace in November, which then saw the temperatures sore into the 40’s during December and January. This incredibly hot and dry summer season was challenging for many grape farmers. We have the good fortune that our water supply was very adequate and with excellent vineyard management our vineyards performed very well. The harvest was earlier than usual, yet yielded higher than 2015. The quality of the grapes was very good. Interestingly the 2016 vintage is remembered for its delicate and elegant flavours compared to the bolder flavours from 2015. Both our single vineyard Syrah block, as well as the Merlot block was harvested by hand. The grapes were then sorted by hand on the sorting table, ensuring only the best grapes are used for our wines.

2017 Growing Season
Following a very dry season during 2016, the grape harvest in general was higher in the Cape Winelands. Interestingly the summer was hot, but since we experienced cooler nights throughout the growing season, it greatly assisted the grapes during the ingoing drought. Even though our water supply was adequate, we managed the water usage very carefully to assist the ripening process of the grapes. The dry conditions were favourable in the sense that there were no diseases present in the vineyards. The grape berries were also a bit smaller than usual which also provided amazing flavour concentration and a beautiful colour to our wines. Harvest time was a bit cooler than previous years, which then created the ideal conditions for a truly exceptional vintage.

2018 Growing Season
The drought, which hampered the Cape, was probably the worst in over 100 years. The Cape experienced serious water shortages and restrictions were put in place to manage the water reserves. The harvest season for most wine farmers was very challenging due to the drought and water restrictions. In general, the wine industry experienced a dip in production for the 2018 vintage, but with good quality. Fortunately our farm water reserves were more than adequate for our three vineyard blocks. They received enough water throughout the growing season and they were disease-free due to the dry conditions. Our yield increased from the previous year, but it must also be mentioned that our young Syrah block was in full swing, which produced an exceptional yield and quality.
