2018 Growing Season

Following another dry season in 2017, the grape harvest in general was higher in the Cape Winelands.
Interestingly the summer was rather dry than extreme heat and we experienced cool nights throughout the
growing season, it greatly assisted the grapes during the ongoing drought.

Even though our water supply was adequate, we managed the water usage very carefully to assist the
ripening process of the grapes. The dry conditions were favourable in the sense that there were no diseases
present in the vineyards. The grape berries were also a bit smaller than usual which also provided amazing
flavour concentration and a beautiful colour to our wines. Harvest time was a bit cooler than previous years,
which then created the ideal conditions for a truly exceptional vintage.

Alcohol 14,5 % vol, Residual Sugar 2.1 gm/l, Total Acidity 5.60 gm/l, pH 3.61

The clusters were hand-picked into 18-kg crates and then selected and sorted by hand before destem, and
finally softly crushed. All grapes come exclusively from our own single vineyard block situated on our farm
at 200m altitude above sea level.

Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at temperatures between 26-30°C for 10 days, followed by
10-15 days of maceration on the skins. The malolactic fermentation took place mainly in French oak barrels,
20% new and 80% first and second fill barrels.

The wine then remained in barrels, in temperature-controlled cellars for 30 months. After bottling, the wine
aged a further 3 months prior to release.

Tasting Notes

A fresh and elegant Merlot with subtle hints of spice. An expression of a dry summer with a gentle tannic
structure, and palate rich in red berry fruit character.

2014 Growing Season
A cold and wet winter with a higher than normal rainfall, allowed the vineyards a well deserved rest to refuel for the following season. Spring arrived on time in September with warm and sunny days but shortly thereafter some more cooler weather set in which ran into October. This later rain worried many a farmer for the coming crops and for potential diseases in the vineyards. The winds also arrived later than usual which caused a certain loss of crop in the vineyards. However, due to efficient vineyard management and accurate irrigation, the remainder crop was similar to the previous year’s 4 tons per hectare and supplied us with an excellent quality grapes. The bunches were selected by hand in both the vineyards and the cellar prior to crushing. The intensity of the juice was very impressive, with the resulting wine being full bodied with bursting flavours of the warm summer.

2013 Growing Season
A classic Cape winter in 2012 followed by a mild spring and warm summer, which allowed for optimal vegetative growth with a normal flowering period. During and after the flowering period, the South Easterly winds started blowing which assisted in purifying the air from potential diseases. Fortunately the winds did not affect the flowers and a decent crop emerged. During November and December the summer sun was in full swing, providing dry weather for optimal ripening conditions. As this was our first personal harvest of these old vineyards, we were delighted to harvest a decent crop of 4 tons per vineyard with healthy ripe grapes at the beginning of February 2013. Our harvesters hand selected the best grape bunches in the vineyard and a further selection took place on the selection table at the cellar prior to crushing. The intensity of the colour of the grape juice was incomparable to most other wine regions. We consider the harvest of 2013 to be a classic harvest and certainly a very exciting one for the entire Simelia team.

An intense and spicy Syrah from the beautiful mountain slopes of Wellington, historically known for its special terroir for Syrah, where cool nights and warm days prevail. With its deep ruby red colour, this full bodied Syrah displays a soft taste and dense structure, very juicy with early maturation. Cedar and wild flowers on the nose, herbs, some eucalyptus and olives on the palate. A very typical, light peppery wine, accessible and good length with fine tannins.

2015 Growing Season
The winter of 2014 will be remembered for the start of a drought that would last for some years. Even though the rainfall in the Western Cape was significantly lower than previous years it was still perfectly adequate for our vineyards. The vineyards rested well during the colder months and interestingly started budding a bit sooner than previous seasons. Our teams suckered the vineyards to ensure all energy would go into grape formation and ripening. The meticulous vineyard management during the growing season enabled excellent health of our vines. Harvest 2015 will be remembered for the marked increase in crop yields and due to the warm summer an earlier than usual harvest at the end of January and beginning February. Our teams worked harder than ever before to harvest the high yield and to select only the best bunches. A beautiful wine was produced marked by freshness and elegance.
